Patricia Cornwell's New Scarpetta Crest Buckle

Winston has finished Patricia Cornwells new Scarpetta Crest Buckle Named Scarpetta after a character in Patricia's new book coming out December 2nd 2008.

I can't believe Winston is an actual character in the book Scarpetta! I don't want to give anything away but if you go to page 147 you can read about Winston's role in her new thriller Scarpetta.

If you don't know who Patricia Cornwell is this might bring you up to date.

From America’s #1 bestselling crime writers comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel.

Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospital’s psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talk—and the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard.

Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

Here are some other pics of The Scarpetta Logo on some of Patricia's favorite things...

The 'Ace Rider' Belt Buckle

The 'Ace Rider' buckle is the first in a new series of hand fabricated buckles from Winstonbuckles.com that will have a total of 10 made when finished. Each buckle is carved with a gold lip mother of pearl skull of a different look but each having a bullet hole through the head and out the back of the buckle. The eyes are glass taxidermy style with the jaw being carved separate and engulfed in hand fabricated sterling silver flames from bottom to top. Each work Winston has created over his 32 year career has been made as a one off. There is no possible way to duplicate any of his work into what would be considered true stone lithographs or copies. This in it self is why the buckles have gone from 880.00 cost items just a few years ago to $3000.00 to $7000.00 works today in down town New York City. Each buckle will have a poem scribed on its back side regarding his thoughts of the Vet's from the United States. It reads as follows:

'ACE RIDER' Fighting for our freedom near and far, so many there are. So long ago and yet still today, how many more will have gone away. Lost souls on many a battle field, each warring a different units shield. It's with the Ace of Spades we ride, always in remembrance of those who died.

Winston's works can be found on his web site at winstonbuckles.com and you can even call him on his personal phone from the same web site.

Nightmare Buckle

This is a new piece carved by Winston 4-21-2008. I received the email and immediately recognized the image from the movie Nightmare before Christmas. I don't know the dimensions on this buckle, come to think of it I don't even know if it's a belt buckle. It could be one of Winston's custom requests hand made for a customer who likes the movie "A nightmare before Christmas".

It almost looks like the silver work around the art has not been finished. That's just my guess, "I'm his son and I know his work well" If you would like to you can leave a comment for Winston. He checks this new blog allot because we have all of his new work published at this blog first. Always more to come...

Skull Belt Buckle with Sword and Flames

This is one of Winston's new Skull Belt Buckle the Sword and Flames are made of sterling silver. The Skull is hand carved by Winston.

According to Winston the Artist, his skull belt buckles have become more and more requested over the last few years. I asked Winston why his Skull Belt Buckles were one of his top sellers and he said "allot of people just really love my skulls...I take that back, actually there are people that are either skull fanatics or skull haters. You either love my skull buckles, or they scare you to death." Then Winston laughs and goes back to carving a Eagle Head belt buckle only half done and roughed from Mother of Pearl.

Bang for the Belt Buckle: Published by Robb Report Magazine

This is an article about Winston and his custom belt buckles published in the Robb Report Magazine November 2006 issue.

Written by:
William Kissel

Title: Bang for the Buckle

John Winston, an artist who prefers to go by simply Winston, recently carved a 391-carat chunk of turquoise into the shape of an American bald eagle. The piece is an impressive example of his work, which involves carving depictions of wildlife or Native Americans from pieces of rough turquoise, mother-of-pearl, and other gemstones and minerals. As with his other creations, Winston did not intend for his eagle to be displayed on a mantel in its owner’s home; he expects the owner to wear it on his belt. Winston crafts unique belt buckles that are precious enough to become family heirlooms.

“There is absolutely no one in the world who makes buckles like him,” says Todd Rauchwerger, owner of the J.W. Cooper stores in New York City and Bal Harbour, Fla., which have carried Winston’s buckles for more than a decade. Rauchwerger says he could have sold many more of the $1,500-to-$6,500 buckles over the past six years if the artist had not spent much of that period living and working in an RV with no telephone or Internet access.

“I called him once to place a $6,000 order, and his phone had been disconnected,” says Rauchwerger, who searched for the elusive designer for months before he received a Christmas card explaining his whereabouts. “It said something like ‘Dear Todd, I got tired of people, so I sold my house, bought an RV, and set up shop in my mobile home.’ ” Winston recently established a more permanent address in Daytona Beach, Fla., but his flamboyant designs remain difficult to acquire because he produces fewer than 115 buckles a year. “I can see them doubling or tripling, up to $10,000 or $15,000 at least, with time,” notes Rauchwerger of the buckles’ value as collectibles.

Much like custom cuff links or a limited-edition watch, a belt can reflect the wearer’s appreciation for quality and workmanship and demonstrate a sense of style. “Unfortunately some men pay a lot of attention to their clothing, but attach less importance to their accessories,” says Beatrice Amblard, who worked at Hermès for more than a decade before establishing her own custom business, April in Paris, in San Francisco six years ago. “If a man has a great suit and a beautiful pair of shoes, and he wears them with a poorly made belt, it’s a good indicator that at some point his sense of style just stops.” Amblard produces understated 18-karat gold or sterling silver buckles that she pairs with simple, high-quality alligator or calfskin straps. Amblard says that acquiring a custom buckle and belt can require research and legwork, unlike ordering a bespoke suit or bench-made shoes, which are more widely available. Retail outlets for such belts and buckles are limited, and most of the country’s finest buckle makers—often artisans who learned the skills from their fathers and grandfathers—ply their craft in remote locales, often in obscurity.
